Mike Whellans is the consummate bluesman being a brilliant songwriter, a sharp singer and a mean hand at the guitar.
He is a keeper of the one man blues band flame that burned so passionately in the work of the masters of this highly specialised form, including Jesse Fuller and the great British performer, Tony “Duster” Bennett. As a dynamic one-man blues band, Mike Whellans sings whilst playing guitar, percussion and harmonica.
Like all true bluesmen when Mike Whellans sings and plays, he means it. He can set a scene of darkness and foreboding as the boogie man lurks, plays twelve-string guitar in the grand driving blues tradition and sings of desertion so that you really feel his loss.
A founder member of the Boys of the Lough and of the Vindscreen Vipers, long-time resident in Denmark, but now back living in Scotland, a Mike Whellans gig is straight from the hip energy with the most dynamic one-man blues band any side of the Forth delta.
