While some people only dream of becoming artists their entire lives, others follow their dream while also pursuing brilliant careers in other fields. Such is the case of crooner Colin Hunter. Colin is the founder, owner and Chairman of the Board of the Sunwing Travel Group, comprising Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations, one of the most important leisure travel organizations in Canada.
However, Colin has always had another passion in his life….his music! A huge fan of the hit songs performed by artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole, Colin fulfilled a long-held dream in 2005, with the release of his first CD, appropriately titled “Come Fly With Me” to coincide with the inaugural flights of Sunwing Airlines.
Since then Colin has made 9 more albums, with Big bands from Ontario and Quebec, and with renowned jazz pianist Joe Sealy.
Colin has been showcased on the Canadian and world stage several times, and is a favorite on Coleur de Jazz 91.1, and JazzFM in Toronto. His amazing voice can be also be heard while flying on his airline, on channel 10.
His love of music lead him to opening a Toronto Jazz Club – JAZZ BISTRO. Colin and his wife Joan wanted to offer the public a comfortable up-scale jazz club, featuring top names from Toronto and international fame, while enjoying delicious food. Colin can often be found on his stage filling the Club with his laid back crooner classics.
ANTHONY TERPSTRA
Anthony Terpstra was born in Oakville in 1952 to Dutch immigrants who wanted their son to study classical music. However, on hearing a Count Basie record (which he still has) Anthony fell in love with it and states, “I knew intuitively what was happening with the drums, the tenor solos, trumpets and the excitement and the time. I knew. I had that record memorized and had Al Cohn and Stan Kenton and Gerry Mulligan records. I remember saying to a music teacher in grade three that I wanted to be a jazz musician when I grew up.”
In 1988 he created The Starlight Orchestra basically to play the songs and melody-oriented dance music he truly enjoyed. He was encouraged by Bob Cary, who Terpstra says is “the greatest style lead trumpet you’ll ever hear” and others such as Cam Walter and Al Hirsch. Terpstra knows what an audience wants and senses when to play it. “My role as leader is to play the night: I make the sets flow and ebb and play the ongoing dynamic of the band and crowd just like a conductor, only in a Dance Band sense”. The Starlight Orchestra is made up of sixteen pieces including five sax, four trumpets, three trombones, piano, bass, drums and vocalist.
Anthony Terpstra’s Seventet is a unique ensemble put together, not to replace the big band, but as an added feature. Influenced by the small band writing of Marty Paich and Gerry Mulligan, the Seventet has a rich sound with clean lines, contrapuntal writing and soloing in and out of ensemble.
